Avoiding Burnout Between Performance Reviews
?When a leader delegates, her work not only get easier, but it helps build teamwork/spirit, raises morale, develops employees, increases productivity and efficiency.? Dr. Vincent Muli Kituku
How to delegate effectively:
1. Delegate responsibility. There is a difference between dumping work on an employee and delegating responsibility. Responsibility gives room for an employee to take self initiative and get the job done on time regardless of whether it?s done your way.
2. Develop a checkup routine. Let the employee know you trust them--don?t check on what they are doing every day. On the onset of delegation arrange when both you and the employee can meet and review the progress and make sure that everything is on track.
3. Avoid asking whether employees understand. If you ask an employee if he understands what you are talking about, chances are that he will respond in a manner that makes him not look dumb. Ask for his input on how he will proceed or how the project can be done on time.
4. Keep records. It has been said that, "The faintest ink is far better than the clearest memory." You have to keep a diary of what projects are being done and by whom, when they start, and when to complete as expected by you and the employee.
5. Let employees lead staff meetings. It builds their confidence and leadership abilities as well as showing employees that you trust their knowledge, skills and abilities. This practice has another added value. It gives you a preview of which of your people could move on to a leadership position should the opportunity avail itself. |
