The practice of waiting for a better time to start doing what is important has destroyed dreams and relegated great potential to oblivion. Waiters are not doers. Never confuse the virtue of patience with the dream buster of procrastination. St. Augustine said, “God has promised you forgiveness for your repentance but not tomorrow for your procrastination.”

All you need to get started is listen, think and act on the words of Dr. Benjamin Mays: “It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy of life lies in not having a goal to reach for. It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideal. It is a disaster to have no ideal to capture. It is not a disgrace not to reach your stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for”

Chapter 8 of Overcoming Buffaloes at Work & in Life: What You Need to Increase Productivity, Overcome Setbacks and Stay Motivated and Focused Without Leaving Your Life Behind is about the principle of Planting in Dry Season. It is the story of Kangundo, Kenya, where there are two seasons, rainy and dry.

Farmers plow and plant corn during the dry season when the soil is loose and easy to turn. With the corn seeds in the ground, farmers know their crop will germinate when rain falls. Planting in the dry season also ensures that the corn seeds are not unearthed by squirrels because it impossible for them to tell which spots have seeds and which do not when the soil is dry.

The goals you set and work on in your “dry” season will determine the quality of your life when the “dry” season is a past incident.

My first seed of a better future was to own a watch. I still recall, as if it were just yesterday, when I first saw a man wearing a watch. That inspired me so much that I started making paper watches by the time I was in the 6th grade.

To plant in your dry season for your professional and personal life, evaluate where you are today. Is your life balanced in personal, professional and spiritual aspects or are you moving forward in one area when everything else is crumbling? Are you where you would like to be in your professional endeavor, living a life of purpose, knowing that what you do is more than a career and you would do it whether there were monetary returns or not?

Here are more insights, not covered in the book, about the principle of doing things before circumstances force you to.

Have unwavering faith that your “seeds” will germinate, grow and bear fruits. Get to work as if there were no option other than seeing your dreams become a reality. If a man had the audacity to build an ark in a desert, expecting floods, why not do something with your faith?

What you do counts when you and/or someone else (or your organization or community) benefits from it. Add value with ideas on how to cut costs, improve customer service or discover new market opportunities. Always do what needs done, even if it’s not in your job description, to get the job done. That’s how you become a man or woman of value.
Accept 100% responsibility as the CEO of your life and anything pertaining to it. Your acts are your “seeds.” when they are planted, how and why—you are in charge.

You must connect your current efforts and opportunities with the future you expect. In Overcoming Buffaloes at Work and in Life, I tell a story of a man who refused to buy a tie because he was in a desert and needed water and food. Later he found out that he wouldn’t be allowed enter the premises where water and food were served without a tie.

Know why you want to achieve each goal, the resources you already have to get started, what you will need that you don’t have, when you expect to achieve the goal and how you will know you have achieved it. And then get started.

If I went back to college again, I’d concentrate on two areas: learning to write and to speak before an audience. Nothing in life is more important than the ability to communicate effectively.
