You, like everyone with a job today, know that there is no such a thing as a lifetime career. For almost 30 years, workers, especially in industrial areas have seen their jobs threatened or made obsolete by technological advancement, deregulation of international trade, merging of corporate organizations and business sellouts.

The average worker cannot accurately anticipate these changes before they occur. Such unexpected changes could be compared to the appearance of African buffaloes in an African village, where I grew up. They invaded villages without warning, devastating social structures, uprooting the harmonious livelihood of villagers and leaving them feeling insecure and
stressed out.

Organizations, private or public, will never revert to the old womb-to-tomb job security. Job availability and longevity will continue to be dictated by factors beyond the workers’ control. In today’s job market, you will soon compete for a job opening in your hometown with folks who live in foreign soils.

Here are strategies to help you overcome “buffaloes in the workplace,” feel secure, less stressed out and thrive in today’s unpredictable workplaces.

  1. Understand that the resume that got you your job won’t keep you employed. You must strive to update your resume every SIX months with accomplishments that are known by others.

  2. Assume nothing. Your longevity, position or closeness to your boss are not guarantees that you will have a job tomorrow. Work and add value as if you own the organization that you work for. Your job, employer and work location can change. Be prepared anytime.

  1. Flexibility must become a necessary survival tool. Remember the wise saying wisdom that says, “Blessed are the flexible for they shall never be bent out of shape.” You must be flexible enough to change before you are changed. People who believe they can’t change are still changed.

  2. Use network and teamwork skills. It took a community to spear a buffalo. Master basic networking and team-building skills. This is a must in today’s environment. Your next promotion or job opportunity may depend more on your network than on your skills. Who knows you really matters.

  3. Stay in school. Like plants, when you remain green you grow. If you mature (stop learning), the next step is getting rotten.

  4. Become multi-functional. The days of narrow specialization have disappeared. Employers are looking for employees who can do more than what is stipulated in a job description. What skills, knowledge and abilities are you planning to have in the next six months and one, two and five years from now that will keep you abreast of your area of specialization? Keep these things in focus. Dig your water well long before you are thirsty.

  5. Bear in mind, a job alone cannot provide long-term security. There must be a balancing and blending of one’s relationships (with God, family, and community), recreation, personal and professional growth.

Editor’s note: Dr. Vincent Muli Wa Kituku is one of the most sought-after motivational speakers. Dear Dr. Kituku,
Words fail me in trying to express the benefits of the seminar you held for us last week at Fairview Hotel. I am still reeling from the effects of it and reading the notes you gave us. This seminar had very special meaning for me as I had just made a decision to go into motivational speaking as a business after getting retrenched late last year. Your stories were inspirational and helped me settle the decision to follow this path in my mind. The ‘Business of Speaking’ session really opened my eyes and I know for a fact that it was worth every penny I paid.

In 1997, I made a promise to myself -- That I will never give an aspiring or established speaker the answer to their question with any reservation. I believe possession of the right knowledge in any endeavor one pursues is as critical as his/her passion, skills and endurance. My goal is for aspiring and established speakers to be equipped with practical tools that they need, within the shortest possible time, to change lives and help organizations and be REWARDED accordingly.

As most of you know, I have probably trained or coached more aspiring speakers in this region than anyone else. My concern, however, has been how to make sure that each aspiring or established speaker has resources for continuous growth; opportunity to learn what is working and what is not, network with other speakers and more importantly meet and showcase their expertise to those who hire speakers.

Northwest Speakers Forum (NWSF) is established to provide a platform where ideas are discussed openly and questions are encouraged. The goal is to grow together in the business of changing the world with the power of the spoken word while maximizing returns from products and other services.

As such, as a member you will be provided with proven knowledge and strategies on how to:

  • Develop outstanding speaking skills that will get you hired and paid
  • Use stories and props to inspire your audience to act
  • Create and run a thriving speaking business
  • Develop creative multiple sources of income
  • Come up with products that make you an authority on your
    subject matter
  • Utilize the media (at no cost to your business) and build online presence
  • Create and market public seminars.

    (See details at

We will have live teleconference facilities and abilities to allow those in distance areas, away from Boise, Idaho to participate.

The instructor(s) for each three hours program will top speakers, media experts, meeting planners, book publishers and published authors and others who have in-depth knowledge of the speaking industry. We will bring in nationally recognized authorities and if you know a person we need to contact, just let me or any of my associates know.

When your life is engrossed in worries, you spend value time and efforts looking around. Sorrow on the other hand makes you look back, taking from you the opportunity of living for now or planting seeds for the future. Faith, however, lifts you up above worries and sorrows. Faith helps you to be alive at the present time while looking up to the beauty of tomorrow.

Sorrows in life are unavoidable. How could one who has not gone through sorrow know the deep meaning of hope or how to empathize with those afflicted by grief? Sorrowful experiences connect us with the realities of our vulnerability. Focusing on our vulnerabilities or sorrowful event(s) is what takes away the courage and resolve we need to live up to our potential in those times in our lives when living is a struggle.

Worry is a strange experience that may result from real or perceived interference with how we live or would like to live our lives. Excessive worries may lead to illness, broken relationships and fumbled careers. Of the two (worry and sorrow), worry is largely controllable with our thoughts, associates and ability to evaluate ones situation and plan for the future.

There is a metaphor I love about turning bad experiences into opportunities. It’s a story of a donkey that had given its owner, a farmer, service for many years. When it was too old to do anything, the farmer thought of putting it to permanent sleep, but he was not ready emotionally.

However, as the donkey was grazing it fell into a pit. The farmer thought, "Oh, well, since the donkey is just waiting for death, I will just cover it with soil instead of trying to help it out of the pit." He shoveled soil into the pit. When the donkey felt something strange on its back, he shook his body and the soil fell off. The farmer continued shoveling soil and the donkey continued shaking it off its back. Soon the donkey, stepping on the soil that was supposed to bury it, got from the pit and lived its full life.

In life, setbacks are sometimes setups for a new beginning. Storms of life make us develop wings to fly above the clouds. The bottom of the valley in our life is where we learn how to build a ladder to climb to the mountain peak. It's that deep darkness of the night that causes us to search for and light a candle.
