“Advantage comes not from the spectacular or the
technical. Advantage comes from the persistent
seeking of the mundane edge.”
Passion for Excellence |
|
Forget New Year’s resolutions. Design a lifestyle you
can sustain beyond March, when over 95% of all New
Year’s resolutions have long been abandoned. A
lifestyle you can sustain for the rest of your life,
with the same enthusiasm, if not more passion, that
you had at the beginning of the New Year.

While driving home from a conference in Sun Valley,
Idaho, with my friend Dwayne Speegle, Vice President
of the Leavitt Group (Insurance Company), we discussed
the importance of being involved in physical
activities that one can participate in way beyond
retirement age. Dwayne is an avid outdoor enthusiast.
Be it biking, backpacking, hiking or allowing himself
to be punished by the grueling Robie Creek Race, the
toughest ½ marathon in the Northwest, Dwayne is there.
That thought of lifetime activities was the seed of
what I have encouraged thousands of people in my
seminars to do—never to limit their thoughts, plans
and actions to what they feel like doing in the
beginning of the year, but to extend the thoughts,
plans and actions into lifetime involvement.
A few questions can get you started in creating the
future you hope, plan and pray to have. Do you like
what you are doing currently? Are you satisfied with
your personal and/or professional relationships? Are
you involved in activities that bring you intangible
rewards? |

What are you doing for your physical fitness, spiritual growth and
financial independence? What have you done to adjust your attitude
to that of knowing and seeing yourself as the CEO of all you do?
What are your plans for developing your mental fitness by reading,
attending workshops and having quiet time to think/reflection on a
consistent basis?
Aristotle’s wisdom teaches us that to be
excellent in what we do, we must make our actions a habit but not a
one time act.
After working with people who are both fulfilled (making a
difference in this world) and successful (have material rewards), I
realized that resolutions were not part of their personal or
professional plans. They have a way of making decisions, believing
in those decisions and acting on them for the rest of their lives in
one way or the other. Decisions, belief systems and actions become
habitual for those who want to excel in their life endeavors.
 |
 |
You must empower yourself to be the CEO of all your decisions, plans
and actions. You don’t blame others for anything you can control,
starting with your attitude, being accountable for your actions and
doing your best in anything you commit to do.
|
 |
You must believe in achieving what you never accomplished and do
what you have never done in the past to have what you have never
had.
|
 |
To reach new heights of personal and professional growth, you have
to set the bar higher than your previous mark, prepare your mind for
the new life you envision, and act either in new ways or by pushing
your efforts harder than before, or in a combination of both.
|
 |
Develop new relationships and downsize those that impede your
personal and professional growth. The relationships you develop will
largely influence the lifestyle you design for yourself.
|
 |
You must resolve to make past disappointments and failures points of
references but not stumbling blocks that are between you and the
best future you can possibly have. The past is un-adjustable, but
the future is adjustable—adjust it to fit the lifestyle of your
choice.
|
 |
Re-define what success means to you but have a firm understanding
that fulfillment is achievable on a consistent basis, requires
minimum efforts and doesn’t have the subjective measurements we have
for success. Plan to volunteer in community programs that matter to
you.
|
 |
Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind, stretched to a new idea,
never goes back to its original dimension.” Strive to reach new
heights of mental power, the launching platform for great idea and
actions. A single book or a statement made at a workshop or class
can change the course of your life forever. Invest in your mental
growth.
|
 |
Learn to use your non-talent attributes all the time. You don’t need
talent to love life, do your best and contribute to other people’s
successes.
|
 |
Never underestimate what hope and faith can do in whatever paths of
life you choose to follow.

Chapter 20 of the
Overcoming Buffaloes at Work & in Life is devoted to helping
you learn how to be a positive outlier, a character, not from
the average, that influences the outcome of a situation.
Here is the story:
The first outlier I witnessed was my father. This was before I
was a graduate teaching assistant of statistics at the
University of Wyoming, where I had in-depth lessons on how a
single character or a small part of a large population can
create havoc in studies.
|
 |
Dad demanded the best of my brother and me. When
he knew we would be late arriving at school in the morning, he
went to the school office and asked the teacher on duty to cane
us. If we were not among the top students, he did the spanking
himself. For the record, he spanked me when I placed 6th in a
class of 120 students.
He never bought us long trousers or shoes until we were admitted
in government-aided high schools. His thinking was that such
luxuries would distract us from the task at hand, preparing for
a better future. He owned and operated a small clothes
shop—selling the items we couldn’t wear.
Our home, it seemed, was a test site for young people’s ability
to do manual chores. We worked hard, even during some public
holidays. Dad believed you couldn’t have the strength to attend
the festivities that were part of the holidays on an empty
stomach. So you had to earn your keep. |
What Dad demanded was different. You must be different to make a
difference. My uncle, cousins and my best friends had shoes and
long trousers. They worked, but we worked harder. We were, to
the best of my knowledge, the only ones spanked for mediocre
performance.
Dad was nicknamed Ian Smith, the last colonial ruler of what
used to be Northern Rhodesia because of what seemed to be his
unreasonable expectations. Without details, I’ll just say that
only my brother and I, in that group of uncles, cousins and
primary school friends, were admitted at the university after
passing exams that terminated the futures of thousands.
Here are key aspects of a positive and
effective outlier, if you are to influence people for success in
any endeavor in life.
|
|
 |
You must be inspired by two
passions, love and hate. You must love the future you want to
have regardless of what others say and/or do. You must also
hate the status quo, mediocrity, and complacence.
|
 |
You must see things differently
and act differently. An outlier can never settle for what the
average masses accept. |
 |
You must inspire people to
focus on their long term goal. My father inspired us by
promising to provide watches, suits and even cash if we were
admitted at the university. When I achieved Upper Second
Honors, he bought a new graduation gown for me. I kept it.
|
 |
You can never second guess your
decisions and actions if your conscience is clear on the
socio-economic benefits of your vision. |
 |
Learn to move forward as
naysayers busy themselves with what they think you can’t
achieve.
|
 |
Keep rejuvenating your
enthusiasm by learning new strategies to turn your goals into
reality.
|
 |
Remove bitterness from your
heart. The best revenge is to do what your critics said you
couldn’t.
|
 |
Outliers do not sit and hope
things will change. They get up and create the change they
envision. |
When you think of it, George Washington was an outlier and so
were characters such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Galileo, Mother
Teresa, Joan of Arc and Nelson Mandela.
Are you a positive outlier? When an outlier is removed from a
set of data, its influence is gone. In your sphere of life or
work, can your absence be noticeable? Would people wish you were
still available to affect their work or life in a positive way?
You don’t need talent to be an outlier. You need vision of the
future you want, decisions to get you started on a path toward
your vision, and actions that bring you results.

Dr.
Kituku, I just wanted to contact you to keep you updated on some
of the things I have been involved in since I attended the "How
To Speak And Get Paid" seminar in May.
I have been the key-note speaker for a college scholarship award
program, a seminar speaker for a church conference and an
invited speaker at a local church.
In addition, I wanted to let you know that I have taken to heart
and put into action the suggestions you provided for starting my
speaking business on a shoestring budget. For instance, I have
been creating handouts for my speaking engagements and putting
my name and contact information on those handouts! As a
result I have been asked to be a speaker at a conference in
Hawaii next summer!
Thank you Dr. Kituku for showing me the way to success!!
