Do you experience constant job-related stress and/illnesses?

Do you dread going to work?

Do you arrive to work late and watch the clock for the time
to leave?

Can you show what you have done in the last three months?

Do you regularly call or even think of calling in sick when you
are not sick?

Is your identity entirely tied up in your work?

Are there career related-situations damaging your confidence?

Are your family relationships being left behind as you
move ahead?

Do you enjoy your current learning and adjustments that meet new job-related challenges?

Do you understand the big picture of why you are working
where you are?

If you answered yes to six or more of the above questions, you are experiencing what may be the Red Light Signals that your vision is not aligned with what you are doing. There is limited or no growth at all, professionally and personally if you don’t enjoy what you are doing. It is common for people to be physically present but mentally and emotionally absent. They quit but don’t leave. Not good for individuals or employers.

Lee Iacocca, former chairman of Chrysler Corporation, said that most of the 242 million working people, “swing out of bed, yawn, and figure: ‘Oh… I’ve got to make it through another day of drudgery’.”

But Earl Nightingale provided a perspective to the solution when he said, “There is nothing we can do that will bring us more in the way of rewards than daily striving to become better adjusted, happier, more productive human beings. It’s a lifetime job and worth every minute we spend on it.

You have to establish your purpose—something larger than a career, based on what you consider your primary purpose or mission in life. It has to be something to reflect on in your sunset years and be glad about.

The purpose then becomes the foundation of your vision, decisions and actions that bring your goals to fruition. Align your individual purpose with the vision of your organization and the chemistry will fuel creativity, increased productivity, focus and unquestionable motivation. You have the burning desire to wake up and go have fun in what others consider work.

Many organizational decisions continue to be dictated by the winds of change, indicating an undeniable need for individuals to be self-empowered, take risks and venture into uncommon territories of growth and opportunities. What I have said in the past, “Working people have to develop self-empowering strategies that allow them to use their creative and authentic potential to achieve their purposes, as well as create an environment for their employer’s success” is true today.

Change, whether natural or man made has to be a process that perpetuates personal and organizational growth, that provides new abilities so one can thrive beyond chaotic times. Workplace change has the potential to bring new opportunities including the development of new skills, knowledge and abilities. These are the attributes that improve one’s employability.

Individuals and the community have rituals that help people bounce back after going through life’s devastating experiences. Adherence to one’s faith, reflection on what happened, staying in contact with others and physical activities are springboards for the soul, body and mind as one forges ahead in the journey of accomplishing a mission. Each of these tools that can by used by anyone to refocus on their purpose during and after change.

Flexibility that allows people to let GO of what’s not working in order to Focus on the future they want to create, has to be incorporated into our daily thinking and acting. Remember the wisdom that, “Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape.

Regardless of how we think or know, involvement in our community’s growth, provides opportunities to learn, socialize, and help others while strengthening our sense of belonging—something much needed for a sense of fulfillment rarely provided by our jobs. The bonus is that such volunteer activities often provide professional experiences that add to the value of a resume.

There is no solution for this situation—it’s overwhelming.
Why change from what we are already doing?
I am not the manager or CEO, why ask me?
This is not my business, I just work here.
I wish I had more time for my children.

Do you know how to set yourself apart at work and in life?

Do you consistently re-discover talents and resources you need for growth?

Do you know how to thrive by repeatedly providing exceptional services?
Are you a part of something bigger than a career?
Are you equipped with tools to bounce back after setbacks?
Have you moved forward and left your life behind?

These are key issues that Dr. Vincent Muli Wa Kituku has worked on for the last 10 years and will be providing insights on in the next few months. Stay alert!

It seems like the corporate world has discovered or re-discovered that a story has an impact on the bottom line. We killed the workplace soul that fuels creativity, ownership, and dedication with the removal of our stories as part of how we work. Just try to find out how many people know the story of their organization or the life stories of their colleagues.

Who, when, why and how was the organization started are story elements that are largely relegated to oblivion in the rush to have someone doing something for the pay they are receiving. Ask how many companies still have time set aside for employee orientation. Lack of that critical initial connection can be attributed to why many employees don't feel like they belong. Stories are the only ticket we need to belong.

We often don't know the stories of the people we work with or the stories of our customers. Where did they come from? What are their life experiences? What are their family structures, hobbies and ups and downs? How does their personal vision align with the organizational mission? Stories are the only ticket we need to connect with others.

Statistics and PowerPoint slides, as good as some may argue they are, can never achieve the integrated value of a good story. Statistics and slides if used beyond a point determined by listeners, become the reason why they either text messages, read their email or watch videos on their cell phone-because to them, that is not as rude as dozing. A story, once started with appropriate connecting power, makes people want to hear the conflict and solution parts as well as the ending.

A story helps people own what they synthesized from it. They want to act it. They want to team up with others who were touched by the story in the same way. People want to do business with organizations or individuals whose story they know. People heal, find hope and get inspiration to bounce back after setbacks when they hear the story of someone who has overcome similar setbacks.

Cinderella tales, Jack and the Beanstalk and why the Monkey and the Shark are not good friends (as told by this writer) have audiences that hold their breath so they don’t miss a word of the plot. But can you extrapolate the message that relates to the bottom line without your audience thinking they are re-doing kindergarten? You have to know how to select and tell stories that Make People Listen, Think and Act

What is the point of your story?
Is it an inspirational piece or a manipulation tool?
How does it improve the bottom line?
Does the story have the interest of the customer?
Does it challenge people to own their decisions and actions?
Do listeners feel and know they belong after listening to the story?

Does the story create an environment for diverse ideas from different backgrounds?

Does the story reveal how a customer’s life will be improved by your products/services?
Does it inspire people to take risks and bounce back after setbacks?

Anybody can tell a story. The question is, however, can your listeners make it their own vision, be inspired by it and create the future you want them to achieve?
