A few years ago, I brought to your
attention the story of the now late Kimani Nga’ang’a
Murage, a Kenyan who at 82 enrolled as a first grader
soon after the Kenya government made elementary
education free. The thirst for education, professional
and personal growth in Kenya is astonishing and
inspirational.
|
Now, Mr. Rufinus Arap Taa is a
freshman in high school at 75.

What you will not read or hear from the media is the
unequaled desire, commitment and sacrifice
professionals invest in pursuit for education,
professional and personal growth.
In my recent visit, I was privileged to visit and
speak to all four Toastmasters’ clubs (open to anyone
who wants to better his/her public speaking skills--
www.toastmasters.org). What I observed and
experienced is beyond description even though I have
been an active member and financial sponsor of new
members for almost two decades and I have visited over
100 Toastmasters’ clubs.
Here is the

-
A normal weekly meeting attended by more than 50 individuals
-
All attendees staying in a meeting until the end
-
Guests paying to attend a meeting (in some places, guests have to be
given incentives or members “treated” in order to invite guests)
-
Consistency among all clubs in Nairobi
-
Detailed evaluations

Dr. Kituku giving his
first speech to members of Smart Speak Toastmasters Club, Nairobi, Kenya |
What happened during my seminar on How to Speak and Get Paid was moving.
The seminar was scheduled to end at 3:30 p.m. on the second day but only
one participant had left by 6:00 p.m. and the reason was to pick up her
child. The seriousness of their desire to learn was evident from the depth
of questions they asked and the ferocious taking of notes. For a week and
a half after the seminar, I was either conducting face to face or phone
consultations daily.
Anthony Gitonga, author and one of Kenya’s amazing speakers, booked not
only for consulting time when he learned I was to be there but also
invited and made arrangements for me to spend a night at his home, even
though we had never met or known of each other.
It has been said that “The road to success is always under construction.”
To grow and remain relevant in what you do and/or as a person, you have to
continue “constructing” your professional and personal dreams.
|
 |
 |
Associate with people who have done better
than you. Tell them your dreams, what you want to achieve, why you think
it’s important and what you consider your obstacles.
Warning - don’t consider your current lack of money or certificate on the
wall as obstacles.
|
 |
Set goals that you can articulate. They
should be attainable but present challenges that will motivate you and
provide you with the thrill of achievement. Know when you want to
accomplish your goals and the parameters you will use to know you have
achieved them. Something to think about: Going to
work without knowing what you want to achieve lowers your ability to reach
new heights of motivation, productivity and professional personal/growth.
|
 |
Refrain from dwelling on your past failures
and limitations and use them as points of reference only. You are more
likely to succeed by focusing and working on the future you envision than
by looking back to experiences that bring sorrow to you.
You know for sure that you can’t change your past
but you can do something about your future.
|
 |
Learn to love learning. Invest in programs
and materials that add to your knowledge base of things that matter to
you. This world belongs to the learned and that has
nothing to do with race, tribe, religion or any other narrow category that
relegates (or used to relegate) masses to pathetic conditions of living.
|
 |
Help others succeed in their own endeavors.
If there is one thing in life that is achievable by anyone and in its
fulfillment changes lives and the world, it is investing ourselves in the
service of others regardless of whether we are monetary rewarded or not.
Again, “What you do for yourself can get you by.
What you do for others is what will get you ahead; whether in your
profession, spiritual pursuits or relationships.”
|
 |
Know what you can control and what you
can’t. Never waste your brain, a minute of your time or a dime on anything
beyond your control. We only change the world by
being involved in what we can control.
|
 |
There are three aspects that
are very important for your professional/personal growth.
Your faith, your ability to
communicate (join Toastmasters) and the relationships you build.

Editor’s note:
Dr. Vincent Muli Wa Kituku is one of the most sought
after business and conference motivational speakers. He
has risen to prominence by delivering an authentic,
informative, captivating and high-energy message that
tells people how to “spear social buffaloes” and live up
to their greatness. It is a message Dr. Kituku, a native
of Kenya, Africa, has learned from his own life and now
helps others apply to their lives. Vincent offers
individuals and organizations the “spears” of overcoming
and thriving beyond their “buffaloes.”

Dear
Dr. Kituku,
Words fail me in trying to express the benefits of the seminar you held
for us last week at Fairview Hotel. I am still reeling from the effects of
it and reading the notes you gave us. This seminar had very special
meaning for me as I had just made a decision to go into motivational
speaking as a business after getting retrenched late last year. Your
stories were inspirational and helped me settle the decision to follow
this path in my mind. The ‘Business of Speaking’ session really
opened my eyes and I know for a fact that it was worth every penny I paid.

In 1997, I made a promise to myself -- That I will never give an
aspiring or established speaker the answer to their question with any
reservation. I believe possession of the right knowledge in any
endeavor one pursues is as critical as his/her passion, skills and
endurance. My goal is for aspiring and established speakers to be
equipped with practical tools that they need, within the shortest
possible time, to change lives and help organizations and be REWARDED
accordingly.
|
As most of you know, I have probably trained or coached more aspiring
speakers in this region than anyone else. My concern, however, has
been how to make sure that each aspiring or established speaker has
resources for continuous growth; opportunity to learn what is working
and what is not, network with other speakers and more importantly meet
and showcase their expertise to those who hire speakers.
Northwest Speakers Forum (NWSF) is established to provide a
platform where ideas are discussed openly and questions are
encouraged. The goal is to grow together in the business of changing
the world with the power of the spoken word while maximizing returns
from products and other services.
As such, as a member you will be provided with proven knowledge and
strategies on how to:
|
- Develop outstanding speaking skills that will get you hired
and paid
- Use stories and props to inspire your audience to act
- Create and run a thriving speaking business
- Develop creative multiple sources of income
- Come up with products that make you an authority on your
subject matter
- Utilize the media (at no cost to your business) and build
online presence
- Create and market public seminars.
(See details at
www.NorthwestSpeakersForum.com)

|
We will have live teleconference facilities and abilities to allow
those in distance areas, away from Boise, Idaho to participate.
The instructor(s) for each three hours program will top speakers,
media experts, meeting planners, book publishers and published authors
and others who have in-depth knowledge of the speaking industry. We
will bring in nationally recognized authorities and if you know a
person we need to contact, just let me or any of my associates know. |

You are not here as a third class citizen of the
world. You deserve everything good that life has to
offer. The good thing about becoming a first class
citizen and accepting the best is that you are the
only one to liberate your mind and spirit from
thinking you don’t deserve the best.
|
|
In a recent visit to Kenya, I invited Uumweu, a taxi
driver I had hired for lunch in a modest restaurant in
Nairobi. Uumweu’s first statement after we were given
the menu was, “Vaa ti va class kyakwa:” this is not for
my class. I reminded him that I was the one paying for
the lunch but he insisted that he didn’t deserve a meal
costing the listed prices. I tried to persuade him to
not think of himself as belonging to a lower class, with
no success. I had to give him $3 to go eat elsewhere
because he felt he didn’t deserve a lunch costing $8.
Most people have experienced the same feelings as Uumweu.
The only difference is that some do just like he did
while others permit themselves to taste the best of what
life offers. His reaction reminded me of my feelings
when I received an email that I would be picked up from
the Dallas airport by a limousine and given a flight in
my first chartered plane. When you have lived a life of
deprivation, it can be hard to change from that mind
set.
What happened with my next Kenya driver, Simon,
confirmed that until we believe we deserve the best, the
best won’t come. Simon is a fourth grade drop out. One
of eight children of his father’s second wife, he left
school because his family could not pay the tuition. His
first job was selling assorted items (handkerchiefs,
towels, etc) to motorists in Nairobi heavy traffic
areas. He then sold phone cards and invested his
earnings to learn to drive. Within three years of
receiving his driving license, Simon owned the vehicle
he drove me in.
My question to him was, “How is it that someone who left
school in the fourth grade now owns his own taxi?” His
response was, “I wanted the kind of life I saw motorists
enjoying when I was a hawker.”
When you believe you deserve the best in life, you
increase your chances of working hard to achieve it.
When you think you don’t deserve the best, you limit
your chances of ever experiencing the best in life.
