title1

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with great success unexpected in common hours." Henry David Thoreau

Your future, your ability to make your dreams a reality depends on how soon you can let go of what is holding you back, stay focused on your long-term goal, adjust to prevail in changing circumstances and turn setbacks into steppingstones for a new beginning.

On March 1, 2012, I will host two seminar sessions on Run: Whether You Are a Lion or a Gazelle — How to Stay Positive, Thrive in Chaos, Become a Person of Value and Balance Work and Life for our 15th business anniversary. Kellen Moore, the most successful quarterback of college football in America, will be the keynote speaker.

To say I was not terrified of the future as I left Idaho Power is not only a lie but also an understatement. No more paychecks every other week or 401K or health and life insurance. There was no guarantee I would be called to give a speech.

Other underlining factors made the decision to leave a predictable paycheck for uncertain expectations even more disturbing. The needs of my family of six were increasing significantly, as we had just built and moved into our home in Eagle, Idaho, and bought a new family van. My aging parents' financial support could not be left to chance. We had committed to help a brother with his college tuition.

The public speaking skills I learned in Toastmasters were a great asset. I only wish there had been a component on how to market with zero budget. I would read Jeremiah 29: 11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not evil, to give you an expected end" for divine comfort and assurance. God did and continues to do His part.

Among the many "angels" along this journey was Shelley Peterson who had heard me give a speech at a Toastmasters meeting and had her boss invite me to speak to their Hewlett-Packard (HP) business unit. That was the beginning of many business opportunities at HP. The friendship with Shelley continues as we both serve on the board of directors for Caring Hearts & Hands of Hope that raises funds for high school orphans in Kenya.

Heather and Scott Crosby were the editors of a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 1000 in Eagle, Idaho. These "angels" casually mentioned that they were planning to add an inspirational column. I had written African folktales and could only think of two topics that would be considered inspirational. But a seed was planted and shortly the first article was published in late 1997.

Today, more than 1000 articles have been published and read in more than 90 English-speaking countries. For the first six or so years, another “angel,” Renee Hawkley, the former librarian of Lowell Scott Middle School, edited all articles pro bono.

Unexpected inspirations, from all over the world, have come from people who heard my presentations, read my work or listened to my radio and TV programs. Here is what Regina Smith, a retired nurse, wrote, "…although I have never met you, you are a dear friend of mine by listening to you on the radio. I always look forward to Saturdays to hear you and learn life lessons from you…it is such an honor to have you residing in Idaho. Thank you for all you do for us and keep up the good work."

"…I cannot say enough good about you...thank you for being yourself. Don’t let the littleness of others break your spirit. You were put here by God to help us look beyond our barriers…I can not imagine our world without you and your teachings now…" JoAnn Judd

In the process of building a professional speaking business and a child care and pre-school operation, Born to Succeed Early Care and Education Center, in Boise with my wife, I realized that all I needed to know I learned in Kangundo, Kenya — When you need milk, you don’t wait for cows to back up. You get up and go milk them.

As the CEO of your life you are in charge of your decisions and actions. Don’t focus on the obstacles that blur the opportunities of your dream. Take heart and get moving. Faith is following a path that may not be a path to anyone besides you. Faith is what will help you look up as opposed to sorrow that focuses on the past and worry that is concerned with the present.

Learn the basic law of an abundant life: "What we do for ourselves can get us by. What we do for others is what gets us ahead; whether in our profession, spiritual pursuits or relationships." Again, do what you do for something more valuable than money.

Stay Positive, Achieve More, Become a Person
of Value and Balance Work and Life

Have you ever asked yourself the following questions:
  • What if a fast running gazelle ran faster than a slow gazelle each day?
  • What would happen to the gazelle if there were no lions?
  • What if the lion didn't have to run for a meal because gazelles are slow runners?
  • What does the lion do when the only available meal is an African buffalo, an animal that has the ability to fight back, and probably win?

In other words, what happens to you if:
  • You only compete with underachievers?
  • You lack skills of managing perpetual workplace changes?
  • You have zero external forces that inspire and challenge you to utilize your full potential for personal and professional growth?
  • You have challenges that require more than your current abilities can handle?
  • You have all the resources you need for all of your endeavors?

Dr. Kituku's new book is guaranteed to inspire, challenge and provide you with the tools you need to use immediately to thrive, not just survive, in our unpredictable workplaces, balance work and life and overcome setbacks. Complacency has relegated millions of talented people to being mediocre performers in their professional and personal lives. They continue to compare themselves with underachievers or assume yesterday's successes guarantee them today's or tomorrow's success. Dr. Vincent Muli Wa Kituku (author of Overcoming Buffaloes at Work & in Life) says that is the same as a gazelle that outruns a lion today thinking that there is no more running tomorrow. Or a lion that easily caught a gazelle yesterday assuming that it will do the same today and tomorrow. It rarely happens!
