If you know the pain of regret, have
compassion for the millions who are squandering the
golden opportunity of recession. According to a survey
conducted by
sleepbetter.org (see USA TODAY, Life Section on
July 21, 2009), a whopping 39% of American adults
reported that their “dreams of accomplishing big ideas
and great things” have diminished. Add the 7% who said
their dreams have disappeared. Even the 34% who said
their big ideas remained the same are guilty of
wasting a magnificent gift disguised as recession. |
Individuals and organizations often react to a
prevailing situation as if it is the worst that has
ever happened. Current pain makes millions forget that
they have suffered in the past while making the
uncertainty of the future scathingly scary. This
prompts people and organizations to stop focusing on a
bright future and investing in growth related
projects. They languish in a wish for the known and
comfortable past that can never be relived.
Why would I focus on this passing recession when I
recall the days of my youth in Kangundo, Kenya, when
famine led to lunches of porridge for the fortunate
few and nothing for millions? Is this recession worse
than the droughts that turned cattle into walking
bones shepherded by other bones in human frame? Even
the early 80s’ recession that resulted in long lines
at gas stations and about 20% of capable people
unemployed should remind us, as we navigate the
current economic turbulence, that people and
organizations are resilient.
In my graduate program at the University of Wyoming, I
studied fire, among other manipulations, to learn how
it increased the nutritional value and viability of
forage (bitterbrush) for livestock and wildlife. The
conclusion was that fire helps maintain a vibrant
ecosystem. |

Recession, a figurative fire, is necessary for maintaining a
healthy economy. And just as forests and the organisms they
support depend on fire, from time to time, to generate new
growth, the systems and the ways of life we have created need
economic fire (recession) to generate new ways of doing things
better with available resources.
However, to benefit from recession, individuals and
organizations (including the public sector) must have a positive
outlook that motivates them to vigorously pursue solutions.
Investment in creativity and growth focused systems (marketing,
training, motivating employees and improved infrastructure)
positions you to be competitive in the current financial climate
and beyond.
|
The brutal reality is that there are individuals
and organizations thriving today in spite of the recession.
These energetic, optimistic people and organizations will be far
ahead of the laggards who despaired or discarded their big ideas
waiting and hoping for recovery.
The question is, are you going to waste the magnificent gift of
recession? Is your fear of the current pain going to motivate
you to positively create the future you expect or are you going
to succumb to the wait-and-see game that relegates individual
talents and organizations to oblivion? The decision is yours,
and mine, too.

Dr.
Kituku,
I want to thank you so very much for coming to Anchorage and
giving your seminar here. What a privilege it was to meet
you!...I am reading both books…and the Life Lessons sheet is on
my desk in front of me for a "pick-me-up" whenever I need it!
:-) You are an incredible man and I have told everyone I know
that they need to come to your seminar if we are ever lucky
enough to have you back here again. …I have thought about your
stories and the lessons you taught. They have worked well in my
daily dealings with life and I'm sure they will for years to
come!
God has blessed me richly by letting you pass briefly through my
life!

members to tailor his seminar very closely to the needs
of our employees and the circumstances they face each
day in the present economy. Dr. Kituku was so widely
received in July, the decision was made to ask him to
return to again present to our company in October."
Vincent's clients list includes Cisco Systems, Micron,
